What is Raita?

Raita recipes are yogurt based dip and it is spiced with some basic Indian spices and some raw vegetables or crunchy chips or balls. There are some well known raita recipes are cucumber raita, carrot raita and boondi raita.

What is Boondi?

Boondis are small fried balls made form chickpea flour batter. These are tiny crispy balls fried into oil. In any Gujarati family, chickpea flour (besan) based fried snacks are most popular. You can find dozens of recipes especially snacks made from chickpea flour only. Even there are more than one types of boondi recipes are available.

I grew up eating full meal lunch on daily basis which includes different raitas and salads. We always have full meal of at least 5-7 items like roti, curry, dal, rice, salads, papad, some pickles or raitas or just plain yogurt or buttermilk.

You can find many variations in pickles and raitas in my kitchen. I am big fan of plain salads like without any dressing or even seasoning.

But curd or yogurt is default part of everyday lunch and dinner. I set curd by myself everyday in my kitchen. I will also going to share some tips on how to set curd at your home.

My husband is huge fan of boondi raita, he wants it for his lunchbox, but it will become soggy if you mix it prior eating it. So I add all spices with boondi and store it into different container form yogurt. At time of eating lunch, he will mix boondi and curd together have crunchy boondi raita with fried rice or pulav.

You can use this trick for your kids’ or husbands’ lunchbox ideas.

How to make Boondi Raita Recipe?

You can start by adding all spices into curd. The amount of boondi is half of the curd. Again it depends on the crunch you may like.

Then add chili powder and chat masala.

Then add cumin powder and coriander powder. Finally salt and boondi.

Avoid mistakes while making Boondi Raita Recipe

  • Mix the boondi into yogurt at time of serving. IF you mix them way before, then raita become soggy.
  • You can adjust chili powder as per your taste.
  • Sweet boondi raita is also I have tried. I like it, You can add just 1 tsp sugar to get sweetness into boondi raita recipe

Ingredients
  • ½ cup Boondi
  • 1 cup curd
  • salt to taste.
  • Pinch of roasted cumin powder
  • red chili powder to taste
  • Pinch of coriander powder
  • Pinch of chat masala
  • fresh mint leaves(optional)
Instructions
  1. Add curd into mixing bowl. Mix all the spices as per your taste. I like little bit more chat masala into this.
  2. At serving time add boondi into it and have crunchy raita is ready to eat.
Notes
1) For summer, this is best way to have sides with spicy lunch or dinner.
2) Best sides for biryani or fried rice recipes.
